A special focus on young trainees

Neuwied, Dec 22, 2009: Winkler+Dünnebier participates in the “Reading the newspaper broadens horizons” project.
Winkler+Dünnebier AG belongs to the companies that are making an extra effort to additionally promote the general knowledge of their trainees. The 15 company trainees are taking part in “Reading the newspaper broadens horizons”, a research project that the Chamber of Industry and Trade in Koblenz, Germany, the University of Koblenz-Landau and the Rhein newspaper are conducting together for the first time.

A total of some 140 job trainees from 22 different companies will read the newspaper for a year. A team of researchers aims to find out how regularly reading the newspaper will affect their level of general knowledge. Bosses and job trainees can already feel optimistic: In a pilot project, the participants’ general knowledge had almost doubled within a year.
When the Chamber of Industry and Trade approached Dirk Klappert, trainee manager at W+D, and presented the project to him a few months ago, he agreed to take part immediately. “We want our young people to become mature young adults,” said Dirk Klappert. “That means that they should also know about current political discussions, social issues and cultural developments. Reading a daily newspaper can be an enormous help in broadening their horizons.”
The project is supported by the Association of Newspaper Publishers in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland as well as the German Ministry of Education, Sciences, Youth and Culture in Rhineland-Palatinate.
